A rather bike friendly route through the outskirts of Venice, through industrial and residential areas, but also along parks, canals and many Venetian villas.

Point of departure is the train station of Venezia Mestre Ospedale, where the regional trains of the Venezia-Udine line make a stop. One can exit the station either towards the ospedale [hospital] or towards the commercial center (as shown on the GPS trace); take the underpass below the train tracks and get on the bike lane along Via Paccagnella, which runs past the new Ospedale Dell’Angelo hospital complex and head for the residential zone as far as Via Castellana, which has a bike lane switching alternatively between the right side and the left side.

Cross below the railroad tracks using the very narrow sottopassaggio [underpass] (be careful!) and shortly after you will arrive at a large rotary, where, heading left, you take the bike lane along Via Olmo. Once in Olmo, get on Via Frassinelli, then turning right, take Via XXV Aprile, which runs along the railroad tracks and then to a bike/pedestrian underpass.

Emerging from the underpass continue as indicated on the GPS trace as far as Via Rossignago and then to the left on Via della Costituzione, through industrial and commercial buildings; upon arriving at a large rotary turn right towards Mirano along Via della Vittoria and Via Miranese.

At Mirano there are a number of route options, the one described here runs by the park containing two villas, Villa XXV Aprile and Villa Belvedere; enter the park by the north gate and travel along the side of Villa Belvedere; a bit to the east is Villa Morosini XXV Aprile. Mirano is rich with villas and it is possible to see many of them along the designated route.

From the far side of the central piazza in Mirano take the small street that runs to the right side of the canal, which after a short distance, and once across Via della Vittoria, becomes a bike path that runs along the Taglio Canal, a long straightaway of nearly 8 km/5 miles that connects Mirano to Mira; the straightaway is not exclusively reserved for bikes or pedestrians; therefore it is necessary to pay attention to traffic, albeit reduced. There are three underpasses that cross below two highways and then the train tracks of the Venezia-Padova line, where the Mira train station is located.

At the end of the long straightaway one arrives at the north bank of the Brenta Canal, at Mira Taglio and at SR 11 [regional road], the Padana Superiore, which, to the left, takes one back to Venice; from here on the route follows the north bank of the canal using SR 11; alternatively one could take the street on the south side, which has less traffic, but which is much narrower.

From here on the route continues along the north bank of the Brenta Canal, passing by several villas: Villa Bon, Villa Contarini dei Leoni, Villa Querini Stampalia, Villa Seriman, Villa Valmarana, Villa Moscheni, Villa Mocenigo…

At Oriago it is necessary to get off the SR 11, which will get increasingly busy with traffic, taking the more peaceful Via Colombara on the left, which, running along a canal, comes to Via Romea, just recently made inaccessible by a new guardrail; but the cyclist can turn left onto a new bike path which takes one first to a new underpass and then through the zone of a new commercial center; from here one enters the area of Marghera and rejoins SR 11, which takes one directly back to Venice (see the Mestre-Venezia bike route).
