Map of the villa and surroundings

Vigonovo, Via Sagredo, altitude 7 m/23 feet above sea level; train station at Padova about 9 km/5.6 miles to the west. The villa is located in an area separate from but close to Stra, along the Riviera del Brenta.

The villa can be reached on bicycle by way of a small detour of about 1 km/.6 mile from the bike route of the Brenta.

Information about the origin of the villa is not clear; in 1611 there was at this location a villa owned by the Venetian Barbaro family; somehow it was destroyed and then acquired in the middle of the seventeenth century by Pietro Sagredo(*) who had it restored.

The villa has a rectangular plan and symmetrical form, with the opposite facades virtually identical; it is flanked by two barchesse [farm support buildings] and other structures including an oratory.

Today the villa houses a well-known restaurant.

X The Sagredo family, of Greek origin, entered the Venetian nobility in 1297; the best known Sagredo is probably Giovanni Francesco a diplomat, philosopher and friend of Galileo who was one of the protagonists for the «Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems».
